The Secretary of State reviews and approves all courses of study to be used by notary public educational vendors. (Government Code section 8201.2.) To locate a California vendor who have been authorized to provide an approved notary public education course contact the Secretary of State for a current list. Also, the California Attorney General's office provides tips on finding approved venders who are qualified to teach notary courses.
Most potential notary publics will find that attending a California state required notary class either in person or online will assist with passing the California state notary public exam.
The purpose of a Notary Public Course or Education is: to offer certified course work for all notary publics; to offer a comprehensive understanding of all regulations and duties of a notary public; to provide the same information for all notary publics applying for certification; reduce the number of lawsuits or complaints filed against notary publics.
Qualifications for a notary public must: Be 18 years of age or older (there is no maximum age set by statute); Be a legal California resident; Complete a course of study approved by the Secretary of State Satisfactorily; complete and pass a written examination prescribed by the Secretary of State; Clear a background check.
Requirements by California law require background checks complete with fingerprinting to be done on all notary publics. Information concerning the fingerprinting requirement will be mailed to applicants who pass the examination. All applicants are required to disclose on their application any arrests for which trial is pending and all convictions. California law also requires that all convictions under penal codes 1203.5 and 1203.4a must be dismissed. Contact the Secretary of State prior to signing the application regarding questions.
Items to be taken to a state of California exam include: A current photo identification (e.g. California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles); A complete current Notary Public Application form; A 2" x 2" color passport photo; The Proof of Completion certificate of the six-hour or three-hour approved education course; The registration confirmation letter; and the exam and application processing fee.
Notary supply packages should be approved by the state and contain official notary bonds, notary public seals and notary journals all designed to ensure the notary public can properly do his or her notary duties.
A California notary is an excellent way to make a comfortable living and potentially very successful career. Ensure all proper steps are taken to become a California notary and the perhaps one day a Notary of the Year Award will be in a the future. Keep in mind that it can take 6 to 9 months to become a licensed notary public.
