If one were to ask me to list some of my favorite television shows, most would easily fall under the category of crime and spy dramas. From Law & Order to Alias to the new series Rizzoli & Isles, I can't get enough. You wouldn't think a young teenager would so easily fall in love with a show following a bunch of detectives in New York City looking for justice. Law & Order isn't even the type of television show depicting extreme violence and action. At the start of the show, the crime has already been committed. The viewers are left to follow the trail from the crime scene to the court room. Not exactly a show younger people would fall in love with. But I did and I haven't stopped watching since.

It's a little easier to see though why I love fall so deeply in love with Alias. The show starred Jennifer Garner as a double agent for the CIA. It was high drama and a lot of sexy outfits. Plus it's totally awesome to watch a woman beat up men. Despite the farfetched plot lines towards the end of the series, it was a show I couldn't stop watching. Covert Affairs on USA Network has taken its place but with a more realistic outlook. It's the perfect dose of drama with lighthearted humor sprinkled on top. Plus, I imagine working for the CIA is a bit more like that show.

So why do I love watching justice being dished out where it is due, especially with strong female leads? I think it mainly has to do with the fact that I wish I could go into these fields. If I had more patience and determination, I'd like to think I would make a great lawyer. The law is an intricate web of rules and regulations and for whatever reason, it fascinates me. Same with detective work. I could never be a cop. I neither have the physical strength nor the stomach to deal with brutal murders. I doubt I'd make a good detective if I were able to work my way up. All I can do is live vicariously through these fictional characters.

If I had my choice of careers though, it would hands down be for the CIA. Again, I don't have that whole physicality aspect to be a spy. Nor can I speak several languages and think quickly on the spot. I'd literally be the worst spy on the planet. I can dream can't I? And dream I shall continue to do. I'll get my kicks watching these television shows, hoping that my life may be different. I know I'll never be the next Sydney Bristow or Jack McCoy, but the shows will always satisfy my inner crime fighter and I can live with that.
